Installative light intervention, steel construct with light, 204-212 cm x 250 cm
Commissioned by Jazzfest Berlin
The installative intervention TRANS LUCENT was specifically developed for the 55th edition of the JazzFestival Berlin 2018, curated by artistic director Nadin Deventer. Drawing on the festival’s political themes the art project picks up their conceptual strings, developing them further, extending them into a spatial dimension. Ten massive yet delicate autonomous steel and light constructs are temporarily attached within the entrance foyer and first floor of the Berliner Festspiele main house. The foreign objects highlight thresholds, mark transitional spaces and draw the attention to in between moments of movement, reflecting on mobility and agency as the audience becomes part of the installation, interacting with the light art installation or avoiding it; either way reacting to its form, function and impact. They become acteurs, fleetingly merging into the installation. Based on Edouard Glissant’s theory on and invocation for the opaque, these ten metal art constructs unfold their impact based on the tension of light versus darkness and its shades and nuances as well as on visibility and transparency. Questions about frontiers, difference, transparency, agency and mobility are touched and reflected in an initially awkward yet almost playful way. After the festival the art works are detached and stored, ready for their next destination.
